William Lind

August 31, 1947 — December 20, 2022

William “Bill” Fred Lind, age 75 of Montello passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at Central Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. Bill was born in Elgin, IL and graduated from Elgin High School in 1966. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Upon returning from his time in service, Bill was united in marriage to Donna Bradley in Grays Lake, IL; together they had three daughters.

Bill found Montello because of his love of the outdoors and his father’s cabin near Lake Puckaway, moving his family to the community in 1970 and after a short stint as a police officer he went into the hardware business; he owned and operated Holliday in Montello for 53 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and thoroughly enjoyed passing on his knowledge of the outdoors to the next generation. Bill not only gave to his country through service but also his community, he was a longtime and active member of the Montello Rotary, Montello Rod and Gun Club, lifetime member of the Harrisville Sportsmen’s Club as well as the Montello Bow Benders. He also had a love for raising and racing pigeons which he did since from a very young age; he founded the Montello Racing Pigeon Club in 1976. Bill and Donna hosted several foreign exchange students in the early 1990’s; he will be remembered for his big smile and laugh, zest of life, helping others and the love for the great outdoors.

Bill leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Donna and three daughters: Rhonda (Pat) Hughes of Montello, Nicole (Dwight) Herrick) of Stanton, IA and Sarah (Lyle Schmidtke) Lind of Montello as well as six grandchildren: Zach (April) Hughes, Brittany (Matt) Zuelke and Rayanna, Amber, Matthew and Nicholas Herrick. He is also survived by great-grandson, Everett Hughes, sister, Marcia Kulpa and brother, Herb (Terri). Bill is further survived by his brother-in-law, Pat (Ann) Bradley, lifelong best friend, Randall (Karen) Lemcke and many other extended family members.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Dale (Donna) and brother-in-law, Jack Kulpa.
